Farming in the 50's
Hovatter farms started out with a 2 row horse drawn corn planter. Over the years, more modern Allis Chalmers, Internatinal Harvester and John Deere tractors were added.
Farm crops changed from white ear corn trucked into Georgetown and milled into hominy grits at Wilkins & Rogers Milling Co., to tall grass hay bales sold on site as more and more horse farms evolved in nearby Leesburg, Middleburg and Upperville.
From horse drawn corn planters to flying fertilizer spreaders, Hovatter Farms changed with the times for over 60 years.
Hays for Horses,
the haying years, 1980 - 2017
The annual crop of 7,000 square bales and over 700 large round bales was the highest quality hay possible.
In good weather, customers picked up their orders directly from the fields.
Most of the hay was stored for winter customers in the long white barn that remains on the property today.
